Best Foods for Your Memory and Attention

Your brain (mind) and your memory are similar to a muscle. Please remember the old adage "use it or lose it" which applies equally to your body and to your mind.Due to brain plasticity, the more you use your mind, the more you learn your memory becomes stronger.
Follow these steps to keep your memory fresh and improve your concentration:
  • Eat the foods I mention in this video clip daily
  • Keep blood pressure/cholesterol within normal levels
  • Get enough evening sleep. It helps consolidate and retain your memories
  • Engage in physical activities and exercise daily
  • Keep your brain oxygenated
  • Keep learning, challenge your brain-it strengthens existing neuronal pathways, and builds new nerve connections that improve your memory
  • Relax and avoid stress
  • Do NOT smoke-Smoking increases the risk for stroke and hypertension, two major causes of memory loss
  • Drink in moderation
See my video clip for more details

Memory is the ability to remember events, skills, experiences through the complex process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information. This  complex process involves several regions of the brain. Encoding (registration) is the first step in creating a new memory. It permits your five senses to perceive the information of the outer world in the forms of chemical and physical stimuli to be converted and stored within the brain, and later recalled from short-term or long-term memory. Storage creates a permanent record of and preserves information over periods of time. Retrieval (recall) of information allows stored information to be located and returned to your perception. Types of memory:
  • Sensory, part of the process of perception,  takes the information given by your five senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell) and retains it accurately for maximum two seconds. It is an essential step for storing information in short-term
  • Short-term memoryt-term (recent or working memory), a necessary step toward long-term memory, records and stores maximum  seven items of information and lasts a few dozen seconds. You will not remember it unless you make a conscious effort to retain it.
  • Long-term (remote), stores significant events in your lives, lets you retain the meanings of words and the physical skills that you have learned. It can last months, years, or your entire lifetime.
Forgetfulness, amnesia, memory loss or poor memory, is the failure to remember. Moderate memory problems and decline of thinking skills are a reasonably common part of aging, although you see more often younger people struggling with remembering than a few decades ago. Normal changes in memory do not prevent you from carrying out everyday tasks, from  taking care of yourself and family, from keeping your job and enjoying life. There are two kinds of amnesia: retrograde and anterograde. Retrograde amnesia is the inability to retrieve information that was acquired before a particular date. Anterograde amnesia is the inability to transfer new information from the short-term repository into the long-term one.

  • Causes of reversible memory loss and confusion:
  • Poor nutrition and insufficient sleep
  • Medications: antidepressants, antihistamines, anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills
  • Minor head trauma or injury
  • Stress, anxiety or depression
  • Alcoholism, smoking and drugs
  • Vitamins deficiency, especially B-12 which helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells
  • Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid gland, slows the processing of nutrients to create energy for cells
  • Brain tumors
Ways to preserve and improve memory: The foods that I describe in this presentation will definitely help you with  your memory problems, concentration and learning ability. Add them to your daily diet in addition to regular exercise (of your body and your mind) and physical activities in well -oxygenated areas, stop smoking, reduce consumption of alcohol, avoid stressful situations and individuals, meditate,  last but not least sleep minimum seven hours daily. In a few months you will notice considerable improvement.

How to Eat Less

Hunger is a feeling triggered by ghrelin, one of the two major hunger hormones that increases your appetite and plays an important role in your body weight. The second hunger hormone is leptin, the satiety hormone, that  decreases your appetite.

Ghrelin is a peptide produced by ghrelin cells in your gastrointestinal tract and released mostly in your stomach when it is empty. Its levels rise significantly before you eat which signals hunger to the brain. Its levels go down for about three hours after the meal. Leptin, on the other hand, is secreted by fat cells all over the body. It signals the brain that the body had enough to eat thus helping in regulating ghrelin.
The way to eat less is to chose those  healthy foods that are slow to digest and metabolize and keep your stomach full for longer periods of time.
Researchers point out that diets rich in whole grains or proteins suppress ghrelin more efficiently than other diets. On the other hand, sleep deprivation increases ghrelin levels, appetite, and hunger.

My presentation includes the most effective foods and ways to help you curb your hunger.

Drink water before, during and after meals to keep your stomach full. People often mistake thirst for hunger because the brain cannot differentiate between the two. Both are controlled by the hypothalamus, which sends the same signals to your stomach. So, opting for a glass of water before eating is a smart idea. Not only it will hydrate your body, but it will also fill your stomach until your next meal. A full glass of water before ordering at a restaurant is a good strategy when you struggle with extra pounds.
Water is the most important nutrient for the human body. It is a key element of your vital organs, it participates in their functions, and it constitutes roughly 90%  of your blood. It makes up more than 50% of your total body weight. Keep in mind the main functions of water in your body:

  •  It carries and distributes minerals, vitamins, glucose, and energy to your cells
  •  It removes toxins from your body through urines and feces
  •  It participates in the  digestion (break-down) of the food you eat, it transports nutrients
  •  It regulates your body temperature in a warm or a cold environment
Everyone should drink at least 64 ounces (1,9 l) per day. Overweight people need to drink more, so do people who are exercising.

Simple key steps to eat less:

  • Pay cash for the food you buy. Psychologists state that you tend to buy junk food and desserts when you pay with credit card. Apparently paying with cash makes you think twice about it, and often you give up in favor of healthier foods.
  • Sit down at the table and keep your mind on what and how much you eat. Chew your food slowly and in small bites. This gives  your stomach time to send your brain the signal that it is full and will allow your brain to “record” what you are doing. Put your fork down in between bites to help you to slow down.
  • Drink water while eating
  • Avoid eating in front of the TV or while reading. Lack of attention to your meal will make you overeat.
  • Avoid to discuss stressful issues while eating. Stress is one major cause of overeating.
  • Avoid or limit alcoholic drinks, such as beers and spirits (distilled beverages) which are loaded with calories. Alcohol drinks lower your inhibitions and you are more likely to indulge in unhealthy eating.
  • Do not watch TV cooking shows. Research shows that seeing food on TV  makes you want to snack and eat more candy.
  • Stay busy. Boredom is one major culprit in overeating.
  • Change the size and color of your plates. Use smaller cups, bowls and plates of different color than your food, say blue, pink, lavender. Smaller dinnerware means smaller meal portions. The size of your dishes  “tells” your brain how much you are “supposed” to eat. Studies indicate that you are likely to eat more from plates whose colors blend in (integrate) with your food.
  • Never eat directly from a box or bag without measuring it. Pre-portion your foods to know how much you eat.
  • Keep unhealthy snacks out of sight and you will eat less. Studies have shown that when you “hide” chips, candies, pastries, cookies, sugary drinks you consume by 25% less.
  • When eating outside, order small portions in small containers. Studies have shown that  a large container will tempt you to eat more food, enven if you are full or the food is tasteless.

Best Foods to Prevent and Fight Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease in which your bones become porous and  fragile, their mass and mineral density decrease, their micro architecture deteriorates, and the proteins in the bone are altered which leads to an increased risk of fracture. World Health Organization (WHO) describes osteoporosis as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the average of young, healthy adults.
Your bone density test results appear in two numbers: T-score (standard deviations) and Z-score. T-score  (above) represents your bone density compared to a healthy young adult of your sex: -1 and above means your bone density is considered normal; between -1 & -2.5 means that your bone density is below normal called osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis; -2.5 and below means your bone density indicates you have osteoporosis. Z-score is the number of standard deviations above or below what is normally expected for someone of your age, sex, weight, and ethnic or racial origin. If your Z-score is equal or below -2 it indicates that something other than aging is causing abnormal bone loss, which your doctor could slow or stop should he/she could identify the underlying problem.
Osteoporosis is classified as primary type 1 (common in women after menopause), primary type 2 (senile osteoporosis occurs after age 75 and is seen in both females and males at a ratio of 2:1), or secondary which occurs at any age and affects both men and women due to chronic medical problems or diseases, or prolonged use of certain medications (steroids),
The foods I describe in this presentation will help you prevent, slow down and stop osteoporosis.

Medical conditions that may lead to osteoporosis:
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Celiac disease-autoimmune disorder of the small intestine
  • Cushing's syndrome-hormonal disorder with high levels of cortisol
  • Crohn's disease-inflammatory bowel disease
  • Chronic kidney failure
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Chronic pancreatitis (often related to alcohol abuse)
  • Type 1 diabetes
  •  Any condition that causes poor mobility.
You need to treat these diseases first before beginning  reversing your osteoporosis.
Steps to prevent and reverse osteoporosis:
  • Eat a diet rich in calcium, vitamins D and K2, potassium, magnesium, zinc and proteins
  • Get enough vitamin D from natural sunlight
  • Exercise regularly, 30 minutes/daily: weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, jumping rope, stair climbing, aerobics, hiking, jogging/running, tennis, Tai Chi. Muscle strengthening exercises such as gentle Yoga and Pilates, lifting weights, using elastic exercise bands and weight machines, lifting your own body weight, standing and rising up on your toes are important
  • Avoid: smoking, and carbonated soft drinks. The latter are rich in phosphoric acid which increases calcium excretion in your urine
  • Limit: caffeine, salt and  alcohol to 2-3 drinks per day as each causes calcium loss from your body

Natural Alternatives for Retinitis Pigmentosa and Other Degenerative Retinal Diseases

Your retina is the thin light-sensitive membrane that covers around 65% of the interior surface  of the back of your eyeball with millions of nerve cells (photo receptors), rods and cones, which are stimulated by light. The ganglions, neurons located in the retina, receive signals from the cones and rods and then transmit the information to the brain via nerves that join to form the optic nerve which results in normal visual perception when your eyes are healthy.
The retina is part of the central nervous system (CNS) and the only that can be imaged directly.
The rods are more numerous, around 120 million, than the cones (6-7 million). The former are situated at the periphery of the retina, while the cones are concentrated in the central yellow spot known as the macula-fovea centralis. Despite of being more sensitive than the cones, the rods are not sensitive to color. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the brown pigmented cell layer outside the neurosensory retina (rods & cones) also called neuroepithelium. RPE nourishes retinal visual cells, it supplies omega-3 fatty acids and glucose, it protects the retina from too much incoming light, and it produces substances to help strengthen the choroid and retina.

Retinitis pigmentosa is the common name applied by Doctor Donders (Dutch ophthalmologist) in 1857, for a group of rare eye diseases consisting of several related, distinct, hereditary, progressive retinal dystrophies  in which  its photoreceptors and the pigment epithelium underneath them are deteriorating. The dystrophy process begins with changes in pigment and damage to the small arteries and blood vessels that supply the retina. Rods, responsible for vision in low light and used for peripheral vision, are the first ones which are affected causing night blindness and gradual narrowing of the field of vision. It ultimately results in tunnel vision with cones being affected as well. The cones provide vision in bright light, including color vision. RP is usually bilateral and seldom leads to total blindness. Some kinds of RP are inherited others are sporadic with no family history at all.
The first sign of retinitis pigmentosa is usually a loss of night vision (nyctalopia), which becomes apparent in childhood. Later, blind spots develop in the side (peripheral) vision. Ultimately, these blind spots merge to produce tunnel vision. The disease progresses over years or decades to affect central vision, which is needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. So, symptoms can start as early as childhood, but side effects may not be obvious until early adulthood. Occasionally, the disorder progresses slowly and is found during eye routine examination. Other symptoms include: cataracts, loss of central vision, open-angle glaucoma (3% of patients).
Your permanent goal should be to slow down the retinal degenerative process and the thinning of its blood vessels. The foods I describe here will help to preserve and re-activate your retina.

Delicious Cures for Arthritis

Arthritis is a group of more than 100 types of inflammatory diseases. It causes the inflammation of your joints, joint pain and stiffness. It usually worsens with age. Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis), rheumatoid arthritis , and  gout are three of the most common arthritis types. The first two are chronic diseases, meaning they cannot be cured.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition which causes  joint cartilage and the bone under to deteriorate (disintegrate). The cartilage is the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of your bones where they form the  joint and cushions them allowing painless movement.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that first targets the lining of joints (synovium). It affects 1% of the world population and is widely  misunderstood.
Gout is a medical condition caused by high levels of uric acid  in blood  which leads to inflammation  and pain n the joints. Acute gout often affects only one joint.
Uric acid crystals, infections or underlying diseases, such as psoriasis or lupus, can cause other types of arthritis.
Unfortunately, arthritis is the primary cause of disability in people over the age of 55. Your main goal should be prevent it or to reduce its symptoms and improve your quality of life. Fortunately Mother Nature is giving you many foods that have the power to calm down joint and bone pains and if caught early heal it.

Best Diet to Increase Libido--How to Revitalize Your Sex Life

Libido or sex drive is your desire for sexual activity. It is determined by biological, social, and psychological factors:
  • Your levels of hormones (testosterone, estrogen)
  • Your work and family
  • Your personality and stress
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your age, self-image, self-esteem
  • Medical conditions: depression, bladder / prostate problems, underactive thyroid, and iron-deficiency anemia
  • Medications: antidepressants
Major causes for sex appetite decline excluding medical conditions and certain drugs:
  • Menopause means less estrogen and blood flow to the vagina which causes dryness
  • Andropause (male menopause) means less testosterone
  • Stress, anxiety, tension
  • Overweight
  • Sedentary life
  • Alcoholism, smoking, and illegal narcotic drugs

The good news is that Mother Nature has plenty of foods that help you improve your sex drive. What you eat and how much has a huge impact on your sexual health. Just remember that what is good for your heart, blood circulation and prevents depression is good for increased libido. The foods I mention in this video will make a difference in your sexual life.

The Importance of a Regular Sexual Life

Medical studies underline that regular lovemaking contributes to a stronger immune system and lower prostate cancer risk. Lovemaking helps to protect against stress, it is a natural antidepressant and pain reliever due to the "happy" hormones released during sex: endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin. Moreover, people who have healthy sex lives live longer and happier lives. Here's why:

Sexual pleasure impacts almost every part of your body.

  • Brain – discharges the release of neurotransmitters which alert the pituitary gland (in charge with estrogen and testosterone-sex hormones) to get ready for lovemaking. The "feel-good" hormones inhibit cortisol, the stress hormone. Sexual release also improves blood flow to the brain.
  • Pituitary gland is the switchboard of lovemaking. It organizes hormones on sexual arousal and discharges them into the blood to regulate your sexual activity. These hormones are: LH (lutenizing) involved in ovulation and secretion of estrogen, and FSH (follicle-stimulating) which regulates the production of sperm. The pituitary gland also sends signal to the adrenal glands, located on top of your kidneys, to start producing hormones.
  • Adrenal glands produce sex hormones and releases adrenaline which increases the heart rate and blood pressure and causes rapid breathinto prepare the body for sex.
  • Immune system - it boosts the body's production of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) an antibody which fights infections) and by lowering cortisol it increases the production of lymphocytes which defend your body against infections.
  • Hormones – it elevates their level which in turn powers your sex drive and it aids in discharging them into the blood by the endocrine glands.
  • Blood – it diverts more blood to the genitals and pelvic areas to prepare them for lovemaking thus the brain prioritizes the blood flow and improves circulation and the vascular system.
  • Heart – It dramatically increases your hear rate before and after lovemaking. It is believed that making love 2-3 times a week, for 20 to 30 minutes, is an exercise that protects you from cardiac disease.
  • Blood pressure – it increases the blood pressure, while your heart is pumping faster and the peripheral blood vessels contract, and it lowers the pulse rate, thus helping your heart to become stronger and more efficient.
  • Lungs / Chest / Nose / Skin / Stomach benefit also from lovemaking which improves blood flow and oxygenation and sharpens senses of smell, taste, touch and it improves your appetite.

    Best Detoxing Foods

    I believe that aging is accelerated by an unhealthy lifestyle rather than by passing years. Most of the slowing down process, such as painful, deteriorating joints, failing kidneys, fatty liver, lazy gallbladder and pancreas, weaken eyes and forgetful mind, is caused by your body being choked-up with toxins. Methodical cleansing is all your body and mind
    need to revitalize. Detoxing clears  the "lanes", the "corridors" if you will,  that are being used when the toxins are eliminated and removes these toxins out your body.

    Detoxification or detox is the medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body. In medicine, detoxification is accomplished by decontamination of poison ingestion and the use of antidotes and techniques such as dialysis and chelation therapy.
    Toxins (damaging substances) come from particular foods when they are too high in saturated fat. Excess sugar and refined products increase your rate of toxins as well. Additionally, the world we live in suffers from overall pollution which affects us all. When these man-made toxins we inhale, absorb and consume increase faster than they are eliminated, our body begins to slow down and struggle. Luckily Mother Nature has plenty of foods rich in nutrients used during detox: fiber, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. The foods I describe in the video clip below will help with and speed up this process. They have the power to neutralize, drain and gently eliminate the toxins from the body. Conduct regular natural detox cures with these foods. Each will have a beneficial effect on your health and vitality. They should be the basis of your detoxification.

    When Do You Need A Detox Cure?
    Pay attention to the following warning signs that your body sends when it is choked with
    toxins:
    •  Persistent fatigue
    •  Disturbed sleep
    •  Temporary stress
    •  Headaches
    •  Intestinal disorders
    •  Joint and muscle pains
    •  Skin problems
    The foods I present here will help you to:
    •  Eliminate toxins. Remember that constipation is the main source of self poisoning. If the toxins are not removed, they will be reabsorbed into the body.
    •  Purify your blood.
    •  Fight free radicals.
    Your body is designed to heal itself under the following  conditions:
    •  Eat a healthy, curative diet, mostly vegetarian with lots of raw foods, vegetable and fruit juices
    •  Exercise and relax regularly
    •  Detox your purging organs
    Your skin, with a 20 ft² or 1.8 m² area is the largest organ of your body, liver, colon, kidneys, lymphatic system, and your lungs participate in the detox program; the first five are cleansed by the foods I present here. For detoxing your lungs, quit smoking, spend  a lot of time outdoors and breath deeply nature's clean air.

    Detox or cleansing is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Adopt a routine main-tenance program with the foods I present in this video clip. In a few months your body will function better, you will look brighter and younger. You will feel more energized in body and mind. When you feel better on the inside, you look better on the outside.
    I suggest you alternate the juice cleanse with solid foods detox especially foods rich in fiber. Fiber from fruits and vegetables helps to bind excess toxins and pull them out of the bowels. This way you will not only  lose unwanted pounds, but you will also enjoy a glowing skin , will regain your optimism and joy of living.

    Foods that Influence Your Moods

    What is mood? Mood (temper or disposition) is a temporary state of mind or feeling, an emotional state that is less specific and less intense than emotions. Mood is either positive or negative that is you are either in a good mood or a bad mood. Mood is controlled by your brain. It differs from temperament or personality traits because the latter last longer. Mood is an internal, subjective state that often can be deduced from your posture and other behaviors. You can be sent into a mood by an unexpected event, from the joy of becoming a mother to the rage of having been cheated by your partner. You may also just fall into a mood after you do eat, drink, sleep, exercise, or meditate or you don't.

    How does food influence your mood? Your brain uses neurotransmitters  (chemicals) to issue commands to the rest of your body. They are created by compounds found in food, so food affects your mind. There are two types of neurotransmitters responsible for your moods: inhibitory and excitatory. Inhibitory neurotransmitters like serotonin exert a calming influence on our minds; excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine stimulate our bodies and minds. The best moods are found when there is a balance between these two types.

    Please view my video clip for more details.

    I suggest you write down the list below with triggers of the bad moods and ideas of improving your disposition. Click on the image and it will enlarge.

    What is good mood food? What is bad mood food?  Is there a connection between your food and your mood? How can some food make you happy and content and others give you the blues?  Keep on reading and you will learn how.

    Eye Tests Can Save Your Life

    They say  that the eyes are the window to the soul, to which I would add that they are a window to your health, which is why you need to have them checked by your ophthalmologist at least once a year.
    This adage is a variant of  "Ut imago est animi voltus sic indices oculi,"  meaning "The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter,"  which belongs to Cicero (106-43 B.C.), famous Roman politician, lawyer, philosopher, orator. It later became "Vultus est index animi'" and "Oculus animi index," which are generally translated "Eyes are the mirror (s) of the soul" namely one can find out a person's thoughts by looking into the eyes.
    Good ophthalmologists might not guess your thoughts but they certainly can tell a lot about your health while they are looking into your eyes. Comprehensive dilated eye exams can catch a wide range of medical conditions and literally can save your life.

    Medical conditions that can be noticed during a routine eye check up:
    • High blood pressure-harms the eye's retina, lens, and optic nerve
    • Heart disease
    • Stroke
    • Diabetes, high blood glucose (sugar)-damages the eye's retina, lens, and optic nerve. Diabetics are at higher risk for glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. The latter leads to blindness as it makes blood vessels in the retina to swell and leak fluids into the eye. However, about 90% of diabetes-related blindness can be avoided by getting an annual eye exam.
    • Jaundice, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, indicates a liver, gallbladder, or pancreas problem in addition to infections, cancer, and blood disorders.
    • Alzheimer's
    • Migraines
    •  Hormonal imbalance
    • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), an incurable form of inflammatory arthritis causing chronic pain in young adults
    • Xanthelasma, fatty deposits on the eyelids, may be a sign of medical conditions with increased blood lipids such as  certain cancers, biliary cirrhosis, pancreatitis, hyper-lipidemia, hypothyroidism, hypercholester-olemia
    Regular eye exams should become an annual habit not only for your eyes' health but also for detecting the above medical conditions and prevent the worse from happening.

    Best Exercises to Reshape Your Body

    Obesity was an unknown term before the 20th century, when in 1997 the World Health Organization (WHO) formally recognized it as a global epidemic.
    A recent Lancet study estimates that the number of overweight adults in the world was 2.1 billion in 2013, compared with 857 million in 1980. Apparently, its rate increases with age, mostly up to 50 or 60 years old. Mexico, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are the top five countries with the highest obesity rates.

    What are your options in this age of technological advancements that keep us sitting too much to preserve and improve the health of your body and mind? Exercise regularly, eat healthy food, destress, relax and sleep minimum 6 hours at night. Keep an eye on your body mass index. BMI is a measure of relative weight based on an individual's mass and height.
    BMI formula is the individual's body mass divided by the square of their height.

    Why Exercise?

    sYour body burns calories, meaning you loose weight. If you cannot devote half an hour to your daily exercise, get more active during the day: take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk rather than drive, clean the house and the yard.
    sElevates high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol, decreases triglycerides, improves your blood circulation, which lowers your risk of cardiovascular diseases, it helps prevent and manage stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, cancer (colon, breast, prostate, lung), and arthritis.
    sStimulates endorphins, brain chemicals which work together with the brain receptors, to diminish your perception of pain generating a positive/energizing/relaxing feeling more like analgesics and sedatives.
    sIncreases your muscle strength and your endurance, it delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, it helps your cardiovascular system work better which helps you have more energy for your daily tasks, it improves your balance and helps prevent falls.
    sHelps you sleep better, sounder, longer and feel more alert  the next day if you exercise five-six hours before going to bed.
    sStimulates self-esteem, self-confidence, improves arousal for women, and reduces erectile dysfunction in men thus improving your sex life.

    If you want to read more about efficient exercises that help you burn fat please view my new 5-minute video clip.

    Mothers of Children Under 5 BEWARE! - International Polio Health Emergency

    On May 5-6, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current spread of polio an international public health emergency. It is its first international alert on polio.
    The epidemics spread at least across 10 countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East which qualifies as an "extraordinary event" that demands a coordinated international response. WHO says Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon "pose the greatest risk of further wild poliovirus exportations in 2014" for having permitted the virus to spread beyond their borders to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Equatorial Guinea respectively. Hence, it recommends the three governments require their citizens to get a current polio vaccination certificate prior to traveling abroad.
    In spite of the fact that the "high transmission season begins in May and June," by April 30, 2014 the WHO has already recorded 68 cases of polio worldwide as compared to 417 for the whole of 2013. Fifty-eight out of 68 cases are in Pakistan.
    Poliomyelitis is a very contagious illness caused by infection with the poliovirus which mostly strikes children under five following direct contact with "infected secretions." Increasing evidence, however, indicates that the virus does cross borders in adult carriers. It is a virus that proliferates in hot weather.

    Immortality Ode

    Splendor in the Grass is part of the tenth stanza of “Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” (known as Ode, Immortality Ode or Great Ode) which is a poem by William Wordsworth, 19th century British Romantic poet, written between 1803-6. The Ode has 11 stanzas, of which the first four debate concerns about man's lost divine vision, the following four stanzas depict how age causes man to lose sight of the divine, and the last three stanzas express hope that the memory of the divine helps us to empathize with others. Wordsworth’s belief in the pre-existence of the soul before the body is apparent as well as his conviction that children have the ability to witness the divine within nature, unlike adults. As children mature, they become more worldly, lose their innocence and this divine vision.

    I
    There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
    The earth, and every common sight
                     To me did seem
                Apparelled in celestial light,
    The glory and the freshness of a dream.
    It is not now as it hath been of yore;--
                 Turn wheresoe’er I may,
                  By night or day,
    The things which I have seen I now can see no more.

    II
                The rainbow comes and goes,
                And lovely is the rose;
                The moon doth with delight
         Look round her when the heavens are bare;
                Waters on a starry night
                Are beautiful and fair;
         The sunshine is a glorious birth;
         But yet I know, where’er I go,
    That there hath past away a glory from the earth.

    III
    Now, while the birds thus sing a joyous song,
         And while the young lambs bound
                As to the tabor’s sound,
    To me alone there came a thought of grief:
    A timely utterance gave that thought relief,
                And I again am strong.
    The cataracts blow their trumpets from the steep,--
    No more shall grief of mine the season wrong:
    I hear the echoes through the mountains throng.
    The winds come to me from the fields of sleep,
                And all the earth is gay;
                    Land and sea
         Give themselves up to jollity,
                And with the heart of May
         Doth every beast keep holiday;--
                    Thou child of joy,
    Shout round me, let me hear thy shouts, thou happy
            Shepherd-boy!

      IV
    Ye blesséd Creatures, I have heard the call
         Ye to each other make; I see
    The heavens laugh with you in your jubilee;
         My heart is at your festival,
           My head hath its coronal,
    The fulness of your bliss, I feel--I feel it all.
             O evil day! if I were sullen
             While Earth herself is adorning
                  This sweet May-morning;
             And the children are culling
                  On every side
             In a thousand valleys far and wide
             Fresh flowers; while the sun shines warm,
    And the babe leaps up on his mother’s arm:--
             I hear, I hear, with joy I hear!
             --But there’s a tree, of many, one,
    A single field which I have look’d upon,
    Both of them speak of something that is gone:
                  The pansy at my feet
                  Doth the same tale repeat:
    Whither is fled the visionary gleam?
    Where is it now, the glory and the dream?

    V
    Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting;
    The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
              Hath had elsewhere its setting
                   And cometh from afar;
              Not in entire forgetfulness,
              And not in utter nakedness,
    But trailing clouds of glory do we come
                   From God, who is our home:
    Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
    Shades of the prison-house begin to close
                   Upon the growing Boy,
    But he beholds the light, and whence it flows,
                   He sees it in his joy;
    The Youth, who daily farther from the east
         Must travel, still is Nature’s priest,
              And by the vision splendid
              Is on his way attended;
    At length the Man perceives it die away,
    And fade into the light of common day.

    VI
    Earth fills her lap with pleasures of her own;
    Yearnings she hath in her own natural kind,
    And, even with something of a mother’s mind,
                   And no unworthy aim,
              The homely nurse doth all she can
    To make her foster-child, her inmate, Man,
                   Forget the glories he hath known,
    And that imperial palace whence he came.

    VII
    Behold the Child among his new-born blisses,
    A six years’ darling of a pigmy size!
    See, where ‘mid work of his own hand he lies,
    Fretted by sallies of his mother’s kisses,
    With light upon him from his father’s eyes!
    See, at his feet, some little plan or chart,
    Some fragment from his dream of human life,
    Shaped by himself with newly-learned art;
              A wedding or a festival,
              A mourning or a funeral;
                   And this hath now his heart,
              And unto this he frames his song:
                   Then will he fit his tongue
    To dialogues of business, love, or strife;
              But it will not be long
              Ere this be thrown aside,
              And with new joy and pride
    The little actor cons another part;
    Filling from time to time his ‘humorous stage’
    With all the Persons, down to palsied Age,
    That life brings with her in her equipage;
              As if his whole vocation
              Were endless imitation.

    VIII
    Thou, whose exterior semblance doth belie
              Thy soul’s immensity;
    Thou best philosopher, who yet dost keep
    Thy heritage, thou eye among the blind,
    That, deaf and silent, read’st the eternal deep,
    Haunted for ever by the eternal Mind,--
              Mighty Prophet! Seer blest!
              On whom those truths rest
    Which we are toiling all our lives to find,
    In darkness lost, the darkness of the grave;
    Thou, over whom thy Immortality
    Broods like the day, a master o’er a slave,
    A Presence which is not to be put by;
              To whom the grave
    Is but a lonely bed, without the sense of sight
    Of day or the warm light,
    A place of thoughts where we in waiting lie;
    Thou little child, yet glorious in the might
    Of heaven-born freedom on thy being’s height,
    Why with such earnest pains dost thou provoke
    The years to bring the inevitable yoke,
    Thus blindly with thy blessedness at strife?
    Full soon thy soul shall have her earthly freight,
    And custom lie upon thee with a weight
    Heavy as frost, and deep almost as life!

    IX

    0 joy! that in our embers
    Is something that doth live,
    That Nature yet remembers
    What was so fugitive!
    The thought of our past years in me doth breed
    Perpetual benediction: not indeed
    For that which is most worthy to be blest,
    Delight and liberty, the simple creed
    Of Childhood, whether busy or at rest,
    With new-fledged hope still fluttering in his breast:--
              --Not for these I raise
              The song of thanks and praise;
         But for those obstinate questionings
         Of sense and outward things,
         Fallings from us, vanishings,
         Blank misgivings of a creature
    Moving about in worlds not realized,
    High instincts, before which our mortal nature
    Did tremble like a guilty thing surprised:
         But for those first affections,
         Those shadowy recollections,
              Which, be they what they may,
    Are yet the fountain-light of all our day,
    Are yet a master-light of all our seeing;
         Uphold us--cherish--and have power to make
    Our noisy years seem moments in the being
    Of the eternal Silence: truths that wake,
                   To perish never;
    Which neither listlessness, nor mad endeavour,
                   Nor man nor boy,
    Nor all that is at enmity with joy,
    Can utterly abolish or destroy!
       Hence, in a season of calm weather
              Though inland far we be,
    Our souls have sight of that immortal sea
                   Which brought us hither;
              Can in a moment travel thither--
    And see the children sport upon the shore,
    And hear the mighty waters rolling evermore.

    X
    Then, sing, ye birds, sing, sing a joyous song!
              And let the young lambs bound
              As to the tabor’s sound!
         We, in thought, will join your throng,
              Ye that pipe and ye that play,
              Ye that through your hearts to-day
              Feel the gladness of the May!
    What though the radiance which was once so bright
    Be now for ever taken from my sight,

    Though nothing can bring back the hour
    Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
              We will grieve not, rather find
              Strength in what remains behind;
              In the primal sympathy
              Which having been must ever be;
              In the soothing thoughts that spring
              Out of human suffering;
              In the faith that looks through death,
    In years that bring the philosophic mind.

    XI
    And 0, ye Fountains, Meadows, Hills, and Groves,
    Forebode not any severing of our loves!
    Yet in my heart of hearts I feel your might;
    I only have relinquish’d one delight
    To live beneath your more habitual sway;
    I love the brooks which down their channels fret
    Even more than when I tripp’d lightly as they;
    The innocent brightness of a new-born day
                   Is lovely yet;
    The clouds that gather round the setting sun
    Do take a sober colouring from an eye
    That hath kept watch o’er man’s mortality;
    Another race hath been, and other palms are won.
       Thanks to the human heart by which we live,
       Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears,
       To me the meanest flower that blows can give
       Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.
