Constipation-Less Known Causes and Natural Remedies

Constipation (Dyschezia), digestive evacuation disorder, is when bowel movements (defecation) are infrequent, hard and painful to pass. If you have fewer than 3 bowel movements per week you are constipated, if you have fewer than one movement per week you are severely constipated.

Defecation is the final act of digestion during which the colon eliminates solid, semisolid, and/or liquid waste material through the anus.  Muscular contraction, peristalsis, in the walls of the colon move fecal matter towards the rectum.  The  colon (large intestine), situated at the end of the GI tract, is about 5 feet (1,5 m) long and 2.5 in (6 cm) in diameter.
Undigested food is also expelled through defecation in a process called egestion.

Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas) and fecal impaction, which can progress to bowel obstruction and become life-threatening.

Points to Remember:
sConstipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems among  all age groups.
sThe hard & dry stools happen when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are slow. Colon sluggishness causes the stool to move through the colon too slowly. Most frequent causes of constipation:
sNot enough fiber & liquids in the diet.
sLack of exercise & physical activity.
sStress.
sExcess of certain medications.
sIrritable bowel syndrome.
sChanges in life& daily routine: pregnancy, older age, & travel.
sAbuse of laxatives.
sIgnoring the urge to have a bowel movement.
sStroke.
sTroubles with the colon, rectum & intestinal function.
sDigestive disorders.
IMPORTANT: In most cases, constipation can be prevented, improved or cured naturally. You can relieve it by treating the underlying medical conditions, with regular exercise, control of stress, relaxation, healthy diet with moderate alcohol and  plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Follow these lifestyle changes for your own health:

  • Give up smoking.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption: two drinks per day for men, one for women.
  • Protect your skin from the sun UV radiation between 10 AM-4 PM.
  • Daily exercise & physical activities that raise your heart rate and make you sweat are beneficial (brisk walking, biking.)-Keep a normal weight for your height, a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or less.
  • Avoid taking menopausal hormone therapy.
  • Avoid exposures to radiation and chemicals are known to cause cancer.
  • Eat a cancer-risk-reducing diet: plant-based diet, no more than 4 ounces of red meat (about the size of a deck of cards) per day on average, avoid processed meats; eat at least five servings of non-starchy vegetables and fruits every day, reduce intake of sugary drinks, juices, desserts and candies, refined breads and bagels, and chips.
  • Get screened for colon, breast, prostate, cervix and skin cancers  regularly.
Finding cancer early significantly increases your chance for a cure and reduces your risk of dying from the disease.

Cancer Preventive Steps:

  • Know your body, pay attention to any pain that intensifies, that does not get better with rest, pain relievers, or anti-inflammatory medication  and  lasts more than two weeks.
  • Do not ignore symptoms that do not go away.
  • Know that most cancers are picked up when people go to their doctor about new symptoms.
  • Any sudden, unintentional weight loss of 10 lb (5 kg) or more needs medical attention.
  • Any flu symptoms that do not go away in 2-3 weeks need to be investigated.
  • Any unjustified fatigue and weakness that does not get better needs to be investigated.
REMEMBER: Routine tests, although important, do not alone protect you from cancer. Notice  anything that is different, peculiar, or unexplainable happening to your body and see your doctor
